Scandals & crimes ledger
resolved — Budget Rent A Car System v. Crockett (civil settlement, ~$10,407)
Budget Rent A Car System sued Jasmine Crockett in 2007 after a Hyundai Sonata she co-rented in November 2006 was crashed and totaled in Louisiana by an additional authorized driver, Soweto Hoilett (a previously convicted robber). Budget held Crockett liable under the rental contract. Crockett, who had just been licensed to practice law, represented herself, contested the claim, and after procedural missteps a judge approved a settlement in October 2008 of approximately $10,407.12 — roughly $4,000 more than her initial offer. This was a negotiated, court-approved civil settlement, not a default judgment. The matter predates her political career.
